Salary Negotiation for Freshers in India: What to Say (With Scripts)
Can freshers negotiate salary in India? Yes — here's how.
The most common belief among freshers in India is that you can't negotiate your first salary. That's wrong.
The belief comes from campus placements, where many large IT service firms do have fixed packages. But this is not true for:
- Product companies (Razorpay, Zepto, CRED, Meesho, etc.)
- Startups — almost always have budget flexibility
- Mid-sized companies in any sector
- Off-campus hiring — where you're competing as an individual, not part of a batch
Even if you can't move the base salary, you can often negotiate a signing bonus, a faster review date, or a better title.
Before you negotiate: 3 things to know
1. Know the market rate
Research what freshers in similar roles are being paid using AmbitionBox, Glassdoor, LinkedIn Salary, and Levels.fyi (for tech).
2. Understand what's in your CTC
CTC (Cost to Company) is not what you take home. Ask HR to break down fixed pay, variable/bonus, PF, and benefits. Negotiate on fixed pay where possible.
3. Have a competing offer if you can
A competing offer is the single strongest negotiation tool available to a fresher.
Script 1: Phone negotiation
Step 1 — Don't respond immediately:
"Thank you so much — I'm really excited about this offer. Can I take a day to review everything properly and get back to you?"
Step 2 — Call back to negotiate:
"Hi [Name], I've reviewed the offer and I'm very excited about the role. I did some research on what similar roles pay at companies like [Company], and I was hoping we could discuss the fixed component. I was expecting something closer to [₹X LPA]. Is there any flexibility there?"
If they say no:
"I understand — would it be possible to look at a signing bonus, or an earlier performance review at 6 months? I'm very motivated to join."
Script 2: Email negotiation
Subject: Re: Offer — [Role] at [Company]
Hi [HR Name],
Thank you so much for the offer — I'm genuinely excited about the [Role] opportunity at [Company].
I've reviewed the details carefully. Based on my research into what similar roles are paying for freshers with my background, I was hoping we could discuss whether there's flexibility in the fixed component of the CTC. I was expecting something closer to [₹X LPA fixed].
I'm very keen to join and I believe this adjustment would help us move quickly to a decision.
Would it be possible to have a quick call to discuss?
[Your name]
What if you have a competing offer?
"I'm very keen on [Company] and this has been my first preference throughout the process. I do have another offer at [₹X LPA]. If you could match or come close to that, I'd accept without any further back and forth."
Rules: be honest, you don't have to reveal the company name, and frame it as sharing information — not an ultimatum.
What freshers can negotiate beyond salary
| What | Why it works |
|---|---|
| Signing bonus | One-time payment, doesn't change salary band |
| 6-month review instead of 12 | Faster path to a raise with clear targets |
| Better job title | Costs nothing, helps your next negotiation |
| Remote/hybrid days | Saves money on commute |
| Learning/certification budget | Signals growth focus |
How much can you realistically negotiate as a fresher?
- Service companies (mass hiring): Usually 0–5% — fixed bands, minimal room
- Product companies / startups: 10–25% above initial offer is common
- FAANG / top-tier companies: Often fixed at band, but signing bonuses are more common
Common mistakes to avoid
Giving a range. If you say ₹7–9 LPA, they'll offer ₹7. Give one number.
Saying you need more for personal reasons. Market data is your friend, not personal circumstance.
Accepting on the call. Even if you're happy, say: "This sounds good — can I confirm in writing by tomorrow?"
Negotiating after accepting. Once you've formally accepted, going back is very hard.
Practice before the call
The scripts work — but only if you can say them without sounding like you're reading them.
Before your negotiation call, read your script out loud 3 times, and practice answering "why do you deserve more?" out loud.
Use the ClavePrep Salary Negotiation Script Builder to generate your personalised script and practice the full conversation before you pick up the phone.
Your first salary sets the base for every future negotiation. Treat it accordingly.
